Marigold- magical flower

Marigold (Calendula officinalis) is well known as a garden flower, but it is definitely an undervalued medicinal plant. In fact, it has been popular as a medicine since Roman times, primarily used for digestive problems and infections. With its wide range of uses, it should be included in any home first aid apothecary.

Immune function

Marigold is rich in polysaccharides, which can work wonders for our immune system. These compounds are immuno-stimulant, antiviral, and antibacterial. This beautiful flower is effective against flu, herpes viruses, and colds.

As a powerful anti-inflammatory, Marigold helps scavenge free radicals. Herbalists often use it to address lymphatic congestion, such as swollen lymph glands and tonsillitis.

Digestive remedy

Valued as a digestive remedy, Marigold soothes the digestive tract in cases of gastritis and peptic ulcers. Its astringent properties make it excellent for stopping diarrhoea and bleeding. Additionally, it can be used as a digestive bitter to stimulate enzyme secretion and as a preventative measure against gallstone formation. It improves overall digestion, alleviates nausea, and is beneficial for dysentery, worms, and fungal infections like candida.

Reproductive support

Not many people know that Calendula can support reproductive health. It helps regulate periods, relieve cramps and breast tenderness, and stop excessive menstrual bleeding. Calendula is reputed for treating tumours and cysts, making it a common ingredient in formulations for fibroids and ovarian and breast cysts.

Other uses of Calendula

It can also relieve varicose veins, fluid retention, UTIs, arthritis, and gout.

External uses of Marigold

I often make a macerated oil from these beautiful golden petals and use it externally to stop bleeding, prevent infection in cuts, ulcers, sores, bruises, and wounds, and speed up their healing process. I also add it to natural mouthwash to heal and prevent inflamed gums. It works as an eye wash for inflammatory eye conditions and can soothe vaginal infections.

Truly a magical flower, Marigold finds her way into my women`s tea blends with rose, yarrow, and betonica.
